Registrar - Step Down Unit

We are urgently seeking a Registrar - Step Down Unit for our hospital in Westmeath, Ireland. Responsibilities Provide 24/7 rotational medical cover for the Step Down Unit and support the Rapid Access Clinic (RAC) as required. Conduct daily ward rounds, assess patients, and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings. Manage admissions, reviews, prescriptions, and discharge summaries in line with hospital policies and clinical standards. Respond promptly to medical emergencies, cardiac arrests, and urgent care situations, leading resuscitation efforts when necessary. Maintain accurate, legible, and timely clinical documentation in accordance with professional and hospital requirements. Work under the supervision of Consultant Physicians while exercising appropriate autonomy at Registrar level. Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, safety huddles, and resuscitation training exercises. Engage in continuous professional development (CPD), attend mandatory training, and contribute to teaching and mentoring of medical students (RCSI affiliation). Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism by supporting other clinical areas and pursuing approved educational opportunities such as UCD or RCPI programmes. Requirements MRCPI / FRCPI / MICGP qualification (or equivalent). Minimum of two years’ experience in an acute hospital setting, ideally with exposure to gerontology or a related specialty. Registered with the Irish Medical Council (IMC). Valid BLS, PLS, and ACLS certifications. Evidence of completed Continuing Professional Development (CPD) within the past 12 months. Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Flexibility to work across the Step Down Unit (SDU), Rapid Access Clinic (RAC), and other clinical areas as required. Job type: Fixed Term / Full-time Responsibilities Work under the supervision of the Oncology Consultant in delivering high-quality Oncology services and provide full support to the Consultants in their clinical duties. Admit Oncology patients—either supervising SHO admissions or acting as the primary admitter—ensuring all patients have a designated Consultant available 24/7. Conduct patient handovers from the previous shift Registrar to maintain continuity of care, make immediate clinical decisions, and issue appropriate orders. Perform daily morning rounds on all Oncology patients, make ongoing care decisions, document findings, and communicate daily plans with Consultants and hospital staff to ensure timely investigations and interventions. Regularly review patients as per the care plan, order necessary investigations, document reviews promptly, and update Consultants on any changes or concerns. At 07:00 and/or 19:00, report to the Critical Care Unit and liaise with the Nurse Manager or Nurse in Charge. Take handover of patients from the previous shift Registrar to ensure continuity of care and make immediate clinical decisions and necessary orders. Review patients in the Critical Care Unit regularly as per the plan of care set at the beginning of the shift, informing the consultant of any issues or complications. Document all review findings promptly and legibly in clinical notes. Attend to emergencies as they arise or provide cover to allow the consultant to manage emergencies. Respond appropriately to any adverse incidents, such as injuries, falls, or sudden illnesses involving patients, visitors, or staff. Contribute to quality improvement, risk management initiatives, and policy development to maintain high standards of care and best practices within the Anaesthesia Service. Support the education and training of Critical Care colleagues and staff. Requirements MRCP, MRCS, or equivalent qualification. Current full registration with the Irish Medical Council. Membership of the College of Anaesthetists Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an Anaesthetic Registrar in an acute hospital setting. Current ACLS certification .
